Style Spotlight: The Mixmaster of High and Low

Urban Darling Presents Kathrine Eldridge

IMG_0546I’d like to say that my closet is an interesting mix of pieces to say the least. In one section, you will see designers like Barbara Bui, Rick Owens, and Dries Van Noten while in another you will discover Forever 21, H&M, and Target. I do not discriminate! Before I came to be a stylist, I worked in high-end women’s clothing boutiques. Working with clients in these stores gave me a wealth of knowledge and experience.  I learned what quality was all about and what constitutes the proper fit.  I saw fashion at its finest.  (I also got some wonderful discounts!) I now am able to look anywhere and find pieces that look the part but are a fraction of the price. One idea that I will put out there is that you get what you pay for. Invest in quality staple items because they will be in your closet forever. Then go to the inexpensive brands to perk up your classics to make them more modern and on trend.

Another tip – don’t be afraid to go to second-hand shops and antique stores.  There are inexpensive and amazing finds to be had.  One of my favorite finds was an eel skin clutch that I got for $20.  Something like it would cost much more in a high-end department store.  It pays to be a detective. I’ve had this clutch for over seven years now and it still adds a level of sophistication to any look.  One last suggestion I have is to shop for statement necklaces at Forever 21.  I have shared this tip with many of my clients and many of them never thought of going there.  When we stop in, they are always pleasantly surprised. Their necklaces are so inexpensive ($5 to $20) and they dress up any outfit.  I can’t tell you how many times I have been stopped wearing one of their necklaces and asked where I got them.

So here’s an example of my take on mixing high and low price points. The dress is by Dolce and Gabbana. The style and fit of this dress is a signature of D&G’s brand and can be found in almost every season they put out there. I was lucky to find this dress discounted at Decades (a haute consignment retailer) when they did a trunk show in Chicago. Even at a discount it was definitely an investment piece for me but I have had it in my wardrobe for the past six years.  You can’t go wrong with florals.  The peplum jacket is from H&M. I got this last year and the cost was only $25.  It continues the feminine vibe of the dress. The choker necklace is from Forever 21 and was $8.  I love how it adds a touch of glam. Lastly, I threw on nude heels by Jimmy Choo.  A nude heel is a must in every woman’s closet.  I’ve had this pair for 3 years now and can wear them with almost anything.

LOVE this look. Great photos, you look stunning!! I’m also a huge fan of the high/low mix, because I appreciate quality items but can only afford certain pieces here and there. Your look is a great example of high/low done to perfection.

You look like a million bucks, Kathrine! The dress is amazing and it elevates the jacket so that no one would ever know that it’s not a high end piece as well. Great job!

  • Laura King

As usual, I LOVE your style! I need nude heels. This spring I’m going to hunt them down.

    • Kathrine Eldridge

Definitely get them Laura because you will use them in every season! :)

This look is stunning! Everything is so carefully thought out. The dress is very flattering, being a sucker for vintage I’m jonesing for that eel clutch! Love Decades, have been to their store in LA and a trunk show in SF at Mark Hopkins a few years back. It’s beyond a dream to be surrounded by the amazing vintage fashion!

    • Kathrine Eldridge

I know you are a major collector of vintage. How I would love to raid your closet and see your store in person! :)

Awesome job mixing highs and lows! One thing I love about this is that only you really know what your “highs” are – it’s not a blatant statement, and that’s honestly how I try to dress as well. It’s very possible to have high end pieces in your every day wardrobe without it being showy! Awesome job proving this!

      Thanks so much Carylee!
