Rave: Gold Detailing for Summer

golddetails1

I’m a loyal silver girl, but when I noticed more and more gold coming into stores for summer clothing and shoes, I couldn’t help but try it out. Now I’m hooked! In the past week, I’ve gotten my hands on two adorable pair of summer sandals adorned with gold. Flip flops are nice and all, but each summer I make sure to treat myself to a couple pair of nicer sandals to spruce up my outfits and show off my pedicures!

This first pair of sandals by Dolce Vita, I got on sale (!!!) at Nordstrom for $45 a couple days ago. The black leather is buttery soft and super comfortable. I love the gold plating on the toes, because it adds a special element to a pretty basic sandal design. I know a lot of people aren’t crazy for mixing brown and black, but this sandal is very versatile and can work with a ton of different outfits.

golddetails3These were the sandals that made me fall in love with gold details! They are Steve Madden, and I got them at Nordstrom for $49. They are pretty comfortable, but do require some breaking in, as the strap is slightly stiff at first. The sandals are very simple, but the gold dresses it up a bit, which I love. This specific sandal came in A TON of different colors. I would like to eventually get my hands on a second or third pair. I think these are perfect for summer, and the rosy nude color matches pretty much everything! Since I usually stick to basic colors, I know I’ll be getting a lot of use out of these over the course of the summer.

What do you think of gold detailing? Will you try this trend, or are you too much of a loyal silver fan? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Kathrine’s Getting Married – Part 1

Never thought at 42 years old that I would be planning a wedding, but here I am, getting married (again) in August.  The last time I got married was when I was 28.  Yes, a lot has changed since then. Two kids, moves back and and forth between Chicago and Boulder, Colorado, a new home, are just a few.  The biggest change with this wedding as opposed to the last is that we are paying for it.  It definitely puts things into perspective.  No, I don’t need the chocolate fountain, 8 bridesmaids, or need to invite every person I have ever met.

My fiancée (a country boy from Arkansas) turned me on to country music and it became something that we love sharing with each other.  So to extend that theme, we are getting married in a barn. Just hear me out here for a second.  Sounds a little rustic but it’s actually very charming.  The barn is part of an apple orchard in Indiana.  The ceremony will take place in the orchard and the reception will be in the barn. (And yes, it’s air-conditioned and very civilized.)

One thing that hasn’t changed with the wedding planning is the excitement of getting the dress. In December of this past year, my mom, sister, and I went on the hunt.  I ended up finding a beautiful lace dress by Paloma Blanca.  Just this past week, I had my first fitting.  Being the high maintenance gal that I am, I wanted to make some changes to the dress.  Originally it was a strapless dress.  I am not a strapless-kind of gal but I loved the neckline.  I ordered extra lace to add some straps and bought a rhinestone belt to be sewn in at the waist. Originally it came with a flower at the waist (not a flowery kind of girl) so the belt gives it a more sophisticated and modern look.  A good mix of city and country.  Just like me and my man. I digress.  The belt hasn’t been sewn on yet and we just did a mock up of what the straps will look like with plain fabric.  Here are some pics from this first fitting.

My next venture is to find accessories to go with the gown.  While at the fitting, I found a gorgeous rhinestone headband I plan on wearing with my hair up.  Initially I was thinking of wearing a tiara with no veil.  Princess in a barn?  I don’t think so  The bling in this headband gives me the sparkle that I love and works great with the gown.  I think it ties in nicely with the belt as well.  I need to focus now on finding beautiful earrings and a bracelet.  Any suggestions?  Here are pics of the headband.

Lastly, I need to find gorgeous shoes with a very small heel.  Comfort is key with an all day event like this.  I am planning on wearing cowboy boots (keep an open mind) during a choreographed dance that me and my fiancée are doing at the beginning of the reception.  It’s a cross between a two-step and a rumba.  (We have been taking dance lessons for almost a year now.) During the fitting I wore the cowboy boots because I knew I would be wearing them.  The boots have a heel height of 1 and 1/2 inches so that’s the heel height I need for my other shoes.  Again, I would love to hear your thoughts.  (I am secretly pining for a sparkly pair of gorgeous Jimmy Choo shoes or Louboutins. Pretty sure they don’t carry the type of heel.)  I am open for suggestions!

I plan on doing another blog later so you can see the finished product.  I am excited to see how it all comes together.  I’m sure you all are wondering if my fiancée will see this.  Bad luck to see the bride in her dress before the wedding!  I’m not really hung up on that idea and we are planning on practicing our dance with the dress before the big day.  I am more nervous about tripping over my dress during our dance than him seeing me in the dress before the ceremony. Less than 3 months until the big day!

Spring Time Swap

Darlings…

Is your winter wardrobe still lingering around? Here are some simple things to try this weekend to change up your look.

Spring time Swap

Dressing for 2? Here’s my top 10 Spring/Summer Must Haves!

So you have your glowing skin, your shiny hair, and your strong nails.(Thank. You. Prenatals!) Everyone is complimenting on how beautiful you look and that you are “just glowing”. But are you are still feeling blah? frumpy? a little bit frustrated with your clothing choices at the moment?

I know trying to stay somewhat style savvy while your body is changing and growing can be extremely frustrating and uncomfortable. I am here to tell you (as I just started my 3rd trimester with my third AND LAST pregnancy) that there are some great pieces that will carry you through the trimesters and beyond.

SO PACK AWAY THOSE YOGA PANTS! Let’s get some clothes to match that glowing skin, shiny hair, and super  duper strong nails.

TIP: When shopping for clothing while  pregnant, consider buying non maternity clothing in a larger size . You can always alter the clothing after the baby .

Here are my  top 10 for spring/summer 2013:

Maxi Dresses: This is going to be my “go to” this summer! Not only is this piece fashionable and comfortable, maxi dresses have the room for your growing belly. Do go for empire waist styles to flature your pregnancy figure. Do go for a v-neck  style for your nursing days during post partum.

maxi outfits

Leggings: Thank goodness for leggings!!  Way better looking on you than yoga pants wouldn’t you say? Do pair with longer tops, dresses, and sweaters.

Tunics: Tunics can be very flattering during pregnancy.

Open Cardigans: Longer length cardigans will elongate your frame. Shorter ones are fine as well and will pull the eye upwards, just make sure your crop cardigans are layered over a longer top.

Skinny Maternity Denim: Like the legging, skinny denims are a must have this spring/summer.

Accessories: Accessories will instantly pull your outfits together! Do go for longer length necklaces to elongate you torso and frame. Do layer and have fun with color.

Sandals: Go for sandals that are easy to get in and out of. Once you hit your third trimester, trying to buckle or tie straps will take FORever!

Flats: So many cute choices where do I begin?

Layering tanks and tees: Tanks and tees are great for everyday maternity wear! Wear them dressed down or dressed up under a blazer and a bold necklace.

Make-up: Change up your lip color! There are many days where I am sick of wearing my maternity outfits remixed for millionth time. So instead of dropping a bunch of moola on new maternity digs, I opt for a new color lipstick or gloss.

3 Ways to Wear: Oxfords

Who knew I would end up owning a pair of oxfords; I sure didn’t. After trying on a pair and giving them a shot… I own a pair & love them. Actually thinking about getting a second pair. This shoe combines 3 very important facts: Style, Comfort & Versatility!

Max Studio dress, BCBG belt, Aerie necklace

Oxfords had a come back a while ago and are not only for men anymore. You can get them in many shapes and colors, so you can choose the one that fits your personality and preferences best. That way they won’t sit in the back of your closet waiting for you to pull them out. Instead, you will wear them every time you get a chance and it will be a great ROI (return on investment). Now as I am writing this, I realized that I had a pair of heeled oxford ankle booties for several years now. Hhhmm, ok, update: I have two pairs and thinking about getting a third pair.
I am wearing the Alisa Oxfords by Cole Haan & the cushioning is amazing. For spring/summer I will ditch the tights and also wear them with sundresses and shorts in beautiful spring colors!

Do you own a pair already? Will you try them? Not your style at all?

To give you an inspiration on what’s out there, I created a set…

Kathrine’s Day to Night Look

I think the key to having looks that go from day to night is to have versatile clothing that can be styled easily with accessories.  Solid color dresses, jeans, blazers, and slim-fitting pants are pieces that easily fit in this category.  Also, great accessories can turn a casual day outfit into a hot, sexy nighttime look.

The outfit that I chose for my day to night look contains a Zara black blazer (which I wear with almost everything), a Phillip Lim printed tank, and skinny jeans by Madewell. For my day look, I chose to wear Sam Edelman flats and kept my accessories minimal.  Just a simple chain necklace and my watch.

IMG_0010IMG_0017

For my nighttime look, I added a vintage statement necklace and some cage heels. This shoe adds sexiness to the look while the necklace dresses up the outfit. I also would add an evening bag.  I have a Phillip Lim black patent leather clutch that would finish off this look nicely.  If I were in warmer weather, I would definitely ditch the blazer and just wear the printed tank with the jeans and heels. If this was a look for someone who works in an office, I would switch out the jeans for a fitted cigarette pant.

Another tip for taking your look from day to night is to refresh your makeup. Adding some eyeshadow, eyeliner, and mascara can always give you a more polished look.  If time isn’t on your side, just put on a bright shade of lipstick on and you’re off to your hot date!

Workplace Wear that Wows

There is no question that women are making their mark in today’s working world. Some of the most powerful companies are now being run by brilliant, driven, and progressive females.  As the modern woman’s position in the business world progresses, so too should her fashion sense. While it is important to maintain an appropriate workplace appearance, there is no reason for the corporate woman to don a dismal, ill-fitting suit and dowdy pumps that look like hand-me-downs from her grandma’s closet. Ladies, now is the time to use your sensibility and your style to make a lasting impression in the workplace.

Remember your audience. First and foremost, it is imperative to always keep in mind the industry in which you are working. If you work in finance, banking, or accounting, for instance, you will have a lot less freedom than ladies who work in marketing, publishing, or technology. This point is especially important to those of you with super strict dress codes at work. Yet even if you must keep your work attire conservative, there is no reason you can’t appear polished and create your own unique look in a more subtle manner.

Focus on fit. One easy way to stand out in a sea of black and grey suits is to find pieces that fit and flatter your figure. It is absolutely worth it to splurge on a few expensive suits for your important meetings and events. Not all black blazers are created equal, and typically more upscale brands like Theory, Alice + Olivia, and Rebecca Taylor will create cleaner, sleeker, more polished silhouettes. If you are looking for something a little more out of the box and fashion forward, check out brands like Rag and Bone or Phillip Lim 3.1  for more interesting yet still professional looks.

Accessorize wisely. Accessories may be one of the most glorious inventions in female fashion. They allow us not only to spice up a simple ensemble, but also to transform one basic outfit into many unique looks. One of the best ways to dress up a boring suit is with colorful jewelry, although nothing too bulky or jingly that would be distracting to others. Another incredibly easy way to add a splash of color and texture to your professional outfit is with a printed silk scarf. Invest in a standout scarf from a classic designer like Missoni, or Pucci, and mix it in with more affordable ones. Additionally, a beautiful belt in a sumptuous leather with interesting hardware can become a focal point of your outfit and can tie together your entire ensemble.

Step it up. When working for 8 or more hours a day, comfort is probably the number one priority when it comes to footwear. However, this doesn’t mean a woman can’t still make a statement with her shoes. There are a few different ways to achieve fabulousity with your footwear in the workplace. For instance, designers like Cole Haan are now including new technology similar to that of running shoes in their soles to create more wearable high heels. Alternatively, pick up a pair of thin, foldable flats you can easily stash in your bag and make a quick swap between the morning commute and the first office meeting of the day. Your toes will thank you and your colleagues will be impressed! If heels are simply not in the cards for you, opt for a fun pair of flats. To bring more pizzazz to your look, seek out interesting textures like patent leather or pony hair and tasteful embellishments like buckles or thin piping.

Polish and primp. Finally, one sure fire way to make any outfit look instantly better is to put effort into your hair and makeup. Develop a quick routine in the morning that will provide maximum results with minimal effort and time. Just putting in a little extra effort in the morning can have you looking more beautiful and feeling more confident throughout your entire day.

In the Spotlight: Girl with Curves

Checking in daily to Girl With Curves has been a ritual of mine for almost a year now. Die hard fan, yes. Lover of all her fashion ideas, yes. Constantly wanting to know who is GWC, yes. Well, I got the absolute pleasure of chatting with Tanesha (that’s right first name basis now) about this empowering, ultra fashionable, plus size blog. Girl with Curves.

Who is Girl with Curves?
I’m Tanesha Awasthi, the founder/editor of GirlWithCurves.com.  I believe that curves are beautiful, and they should be embraced.  Far too long have curvy girls been made to feel inferior and unfashionable by the media and the fashion industry.  It’s time to show the world that a girl with curves can have just as much style, and have just as much fun with fashion as anyone!
Why do you think fashion is so important to curvy girls?
I think fashion itself is a form of expression and art, but I think most curvy girls have a love/hate relationship with fashion as a result of the stigma of being categorized as ‘plus size.’  Through the blog, I’ve found that girls and women of all ages and sizes appreciate fashion, and want to feel amazing and beautiful in their clothes, but the media has instilled the concept of their only being one form of beauty that exists, thus, the majority of curvy girls feel as if they can’t, or shouldn’t, enjoy fashion.  For this reason, I’ve made it my mission to change lives through fashion, by promoting self-esteem and confidence, by saying it’s okay to embrace your curves and to be proud of who you are!
If you could give any advice to curvy girls out there, What would it be?
Embrace your curves and love who you are! Life is much too short to worry about what you aren’t, or focus on changing what you cannot.  Learn to genuinely love the things you like about yourself and focus on the positive.
Where would you like to see Girl with Curves in the next few years?
My dream is for GWC to become the #1 source of plus fashion inspiration on the web!
What are your favorite places to shop?
How do you get inspiration for Girl with Curves?
